Levi's - They Go On [1997].
Before 'The Cell' (that creepy film with J-Lo in it) Tarsem Singh was making inventive, cyclical, minute long, mini-films for a 6 ad Levi's campaign. Here they are in order. What I like most about them is that they don't even register as adverts, there's no gimmick to show off the jeans, it's just fun little stories weaved together, and it all looks great. Music by Alex Lasarenko (Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

Svetlana sucks lemons apparently.
Drench Spring Water - Brains [2008]
Ben said this is how I dance.
Orange - New York Blackout [2003]
The 2003 New York Blackout filtered through an Orange advert asking cinema goers to turn their phones off. How much better is this advert than those god awful 'Don't let a mobile phone ruin your movie' ads they won't let die? Anyways, great choice of song, sweet but eerie. I'd be interested to know if the footage was reenacted or was taken by an opportunist filmmaker on the day. I remember seeing this and feeling envious, I wanted a blackout in my city!

"He'll never see his family again"
Skittles - Midas Touch [2007]
Skittles - Leak [2007]
I love the balance of surrealism, darkness and hilarity in these ads. Some great ideas given the freedom to be weird and funny and effective.

"I'm sorry. Mogwai not for sale."
Nike - Take It To The Next Level [2008]
BT - Business Gremlins [2008]
Apparently the guy in this advert is from Dragon's Den but who cares about that, there's Gremlins all over the place. Though it may be a little sad that the films of my youth are brought back to advertise IT support, I did enjoy seeing the little fellas causing havoc. I'll still never use BT for anything though. There's a making of feature here.

"You got a lotta nerrrrve hanging wi' dem French Fries!"
Pepsi - Bob's House [2008]
This is Pepsi's big ad for this year's Superbowl, the pinnacle of advertising time in America. Though I think ads like this, and the thinking behind it should be applied a lot more often.
Burger King - Chicken Fries [2007]
We've been enjoying this ad in our little office for a month or so now, it simply works. Real chickens on miniature sets, dubbed with great comedic timing.
Malibu - Seriously Easy Going [2000s]
Classic Malibu ads from a good few years back now, but everyone remembers them and has a favourite in the series. Mine is the parking one above. It's a great concept, handled with joy. Here's two more.

Fizzy Pop part 2
This week... Lemonade!
Sprite - Sun Fizz [199?]
Advertising mascots are as old as advertising itself, they're not so common as they were but we still don't give a moments thought when we see a peanut wearing a top hat or the freaky Honey Monster. The only thing is ad injects into this tired old formula of animated mascot heralding it's product is realistic human reaction and the comedic outcome is brilliant. It cuts through decades of advertising's repetition and unreality and even questions what other falsities we accept and all the while, and most importantly, it's hilarious. It is, in a word, refreshing.
R. White's Lemonade - The Secret Lemonade Drinker [1973]
From Wikipedia: "In 1973 the popular Secret Lemonade Drinker advertising campaign was launched, devised by Rod Allen who wrote the slogan. The adverts featured the actor Royce Mills, dubbed with the voice of Ross MacManus (father of Elvis Costello). MacManus wrote the song, with his son providing the backing vocals. The ad won a silver award at the 1974 International Advertising Festival and ran until 1984."
